Which wood would you want?

Updated: Aug 4, 2021

In Indonesia, there are many types of quality wood that are often used to build furniture. A good level of wood quality is usually seen from the density and hardness of the wood. That is why the harder the wood, the better it is to be carved as furniture.

Teak Wood

A popular wood because it is a strong and durable wood & perfect for furniture products. The wood is also valuable and elegant, and as with most things, you will pay a little more for this wood based on its quality.

Sungkai wood

Is one of the timber species that is extremely popular in Indonesia. Often used by people for various purposes such as making a variety of indoor furniture & veneer. In general, it is a proven good quality, although not as good as the quality of teak or rosewood. Sungkai is considered good and very favoured by the workers because the wood can be easily worked or processed (shaped and cut) so there is no difficulty when processing it.

Sungkai wood is often used as a raw material for home furniture manufactures, such as chairs, tables, doors, and wardrobes. It is often processed into veneer which is used to coat plywood surfaces.

The price of Sungkai wood is more affordable than other types of wood, such as mahogany or teak.

This wood is not recommended for outdoor furniture, such as a table or patio chairs. This is because Sungkai wood is not resistant to weather changes.

The Indonesian government has taken steps to assure the international market of the legality and sustainability of its timber products through Sistem Verifikasi Legalitas Kayu (SVLK) certification, also known as the Indonesian Timber Legality Assurance System (INDO-TLAS).

SVLK certification not only ensures that only legal timber is exported from Indonesia but effectively manages sustainable forestry practices while reducing illegal logging and trading. The Indonesian Ministry of Forestry, through its state-owned enterprise Perum Perhutani, manages its teak forest plantations with agroforestry, ensuring biodiversity and providing additional economic benefits to the local economy. SVLK certification is required by law for Indonesian timber to be exported into many major wood-producing countries. Bali Shop and Send will only deal with manufacturers that comply with this law.

The other thing to be mindful of when buying wood products is to check and ask, has the wood been oven-dried For example, some manufactures will just use wood without the oven-drying process & in turn, excess moisture can cause wood to swell or become misshapen. Or, if left alone for long enough, moist wood can even develop mould, essentially rotting away from the inside.

At Bali Shop and Send we always ensure our suppliers advise us of the wood they will use, and we ensure all wood is oven dried.
