Nyepi in Bali: A Day of Complete Silence

The beautiful culture of Bali has many Hindu celebrations throughout the year. If you have ever been to Bali before March, there is a good chance you have ever heard of this remarkable holiday called Nyepi. While most cultures celebrate New Year’s spectacularly, the Balinese do this in complete silence following the Balinese Saka calendar. On this day the island of Bali shuts down completely and, silence and serenity wash over the island. Bali turns off its lights and sounds, stops all traffic and all activities on the day of silence.

The night before Nyepi, Nyepi Eve, the famous Ogoh-)goh parades will be reigning over the streets. At the end of the night, these Ogoh-Ogoh crafted giants will be burnt, believing that the evil spirits that have brought diseases to the island in past year will be banished.

This is the first year since the pandemic that the parades have been allowed.

At Bali Shop & Send we would like to wish all the Balinese people and their families a very Happy Nyepi - Selamat Hari Raya Nyepi.
